Number of Awards & Eligibility: 45 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  4. Must demonstrate a critical financial need. $55,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; a written explanation must be provided if income is higher.
  5. Must attend high school in Florida.
  6. Must be enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter no later than the fall semester following graduation.
  7. Must be a resident of Florida.

Additional Information: The Horatio Alger Florida Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students in the state of Florida who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. This award is funded by through the generosity of the Members of the Moran Foundation. The applicant must have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution. The student may begin his/her studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution. Each applicant must demonstrate involvement in co-curricular and community activities. Scholarship recipients will be announced in January.

Award Amount: The total value of this award is $10,000, paid out in installments annually. If the student receives this award he/she is guaranteed the funding for the full 5 years by maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available online from the Horatio Alger Association website. Each applicant must submit an online application. Paper applications are not accepted. The applicant must also provide a copy of the front page of his/her parent/guardian's 2009 individual federal tax return (1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ or 1099 SSA-Social Security Tax Form). If the student's parent/guardians were not required to file a tax return, the student should include statement copies of any government benefits, such as food stamps or Public Assistance documents. Online applications and supporting materials must be submitted by the deadline.
