Description: We bring travelers together in the largest hostel network in the USA, but that’s just the start: from local tours and experiences, to experiential learning programs, HI USA strives to bring moments of cultural understanding to our guests and community members. HI USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, member-based organization that reinvests our surpluses back into our hostels and programs so they can have an even greater impact, year after year. As the nation’s leading hostel brand, HI USA hosted more than 1.15 million overnights in 2019, with guests from more than 100 countries. For over 80 years, HI USA has provided a network of affordable hostels in converted mansions, reinvented lighthouses, and historic urban buildings across the country. Today, all of our hostels meet HI’s industry-leading quality and sustainability standards.

Application requirements for the Explore America Travel Scholarship are:

Additional Information: As a scholarship recipient, the candidate agrees to the following: • Travel to one of the following HI USA hostels (dorm-style) and stay for at least 4 consecutive nights, but no more than 7 consecutive nights • Recipient must complete travel between May 2023 and June 2023 • Use the online scholarship management application to submit required documentation • At least 40 days prior to travel, contact your local HI USA Staff to reserve your bed. Complete a pre-travel survey and submit required documentation (room confirmation, photo, and bio) with the pre-travel funds request for the first installment. Processing can take up to 21 days • During travel, participate in an approved hostel activity and explore the local community surrounding the hostel. Post at least three photos and/or status updates to Instagram and/or Twitter using the hashtag #exploreamerica and tagging @HIUSA • Within 30 days of return, write a post program presentation as either: video presentation (should include footage of travelers 2-4 min) or PowerPoint presentation (5-10 slides with explanations), complete a post-travel survey and submit a post travel funds request with required documentation (a report of your travels as per HI USA guidelines and three additional photos)

Award Amount: Chosen applicants will receive $1,500  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $54,000.
