Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants and available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must have an unweighted, cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Please note: Students who earned their GED and have not yet attended college must have an ACT composite score of 20 or higher or an SAT score of 950 or higher.
  4. Must be a resident of Idaho.
  5. Must be a graduate from an Idaho high school or the equivalent (i.e., GED earned in Idaho).
  6. Must be a high school senior, GED graduate, or undergraduate student. Eligible students must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree or certificate.
  7. Must enroll as a full-time undergraduate student at Lewis-Clark State College, University of Idaho, Boise State University, Idaho State University, Brigham Young University-Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University, or College of Idaho; OR enroll at least quarter-time at College of Western Idaho, College of Southern Idaho, Eastern Idaho Technical College, or North Idaho College.

Description: This scholarship is open to U.S. high school seniors and undergraduate students who are residents of Idaho, graduated from Idaho high schools, and attend selected Idaho institutions. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and demonstrated financial need.

Additional Information: Applicants must accept all federal grant aid that is made available to them. Applicants for the Opportunity Scholarship are selected as recipients, in part, on the basis of demonstrated financial need. The tool used to determine financial need will be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), used by the United States Department of Education. The financial need of an applicant for an Opportunity Scholarship will be based upon the validated Expected Family Contribution (EFC), as identified by the FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR). Eligible students shall be selected based on rating criteria that assigns 70 percent to financial eligibility and 30 percent to academic eligibility. In the event that this weighted score results in a tie, an eligible student who submitted his/her application to the Board earliest in time will be assigned a higher rank. Please note: Priority for funding will be given to renewal students.

Award Amount: Up to $3,500  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,500.

Applications are available on the Idaho State Board of Education website. Students must complete both the State Board of Education online application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices.
