Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Iowa.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be teaching in a designated teacher shortage area. The shortage areas are listed online at https://www.iowacollegeaid.gov/teachiowascholar
  5. Must be a a fully licensed teacher whose first teaching position in Iowa began no earlier than January 1, 2013. For the purposes of this program, a "teacher" is defined as an individual holding a practitioner's license, issued by the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, who is employed in an instructional, non-administrative position by a school district or area education agency. K-12 principal is not considered an instructional position.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to Iowa educators who are teaching in a shortage subject area, as designated by the Iowa Department of Education. The award is in the form of forgiveness of the recipient's outstanding student loan debt. This program offers $5,000 or $17,500 in loan forgiveness benefits to certain full-time teachers who serve in designated low-income schools.

Application requirements for the Iowa Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program are:

  • FAFSA
  • Application form
  • Employment verification.
Additional Information: The applicant must owe a balance on an eligible federal student loan (Stafford or Consolidation). If outstanding loan balance is less than the maximum forgiveness award, the amount awarded will not exceed the applicant's outstanding principal and interest. The applicant must also be in good standing with all federal student loan accounts.

Award Amount: The maximum forgiveness amount is either $17,500 or $5,000, depending on the subject area taught.   The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $17,500.
