Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In prior years, four awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of Iowa.
  2. Must attend or plan to attend an Iowa college or university.
  3. Must be a current high school senior or currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
  4. This award is for U.S students.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Description: This award is for Iowa high school seniors or students already enrolled at an Iowa college or university. The student must demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character.

Application requirements for the Robert D. Blue Scholarship are:

Additional Information: The Robert D. Blue Scholarship awards students who demonstrate literary and scholastic ability; exhibit qualities of truth, courage, and fellowship; and display moral force of character. Eligibility is scored based on high school grade point average, financial need, references, and the quality of the essay. The scoring scale is as follows: 10 percent for recommendations, 20 percent for academic performance, 25 percent for the essay, and 45 percent for financial need. A reception will be given in honor of the winners in late July or early August in Des Moines.

Award Amount: $500 to $1,000 annually, non-renewable. The award amount is dependent on the amount of funding available.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $750.

Applications will be available online on the Robert D. Blue Scholarship website. Please note: Applications are accepted via the online system only. The student should have the following materials available to him/her before beginning the online application: high school and/or college transcripts; federal tax return(s) (including his/her parents' or guardians' tax returns if claimed as a dependent); a statement of awards and/or grants he/she will receive from college (if applicable); the names and addresses of two people, other than family members, who would be willing to write letters of recommendation on his/her behalf; and an original 500-word essay regarding an individual from his/her community (not a family member) who has demonstrated the responsibilities of being a citizen and what that individual has done for the community. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
