Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any given year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of Louisiana.
  4. Must be a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered student.
  5. Must be a minimum of 17 years of age by April 15 of the year the award is made.
  6. Must be a high school senior or undergraduate student at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for residents of Louisiana age 17 or older who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Applicants must be enrolled in or in the process of applying to an accredited postsecondary institution.

Application requirements for the PFLAG New Orleans Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • ID
  • Photo
Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Students will be judged on the following criteria: affirmation of their gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered identity; demonstration of integrity and honesty; participation and leadership in community activities; determination and potential to achieve personal and academic goals; and demonstration of financial need. Recipients must be present at the awards event to accept the scholarship in person at the award ceremony, usually the Saturday evening before Mother's Day.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $10,000 annually, non-renewable. Awards are paid jointly to the student and the institution and are meant primarily for tuition and fees.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available on the Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) of New Orleans website or by contacting the student's guidance counselor, or by contacting PFLAG of New Orleans using the email and postal address provided. The student must complete the application online, along with the following materials: a scan of his/her Louisiana driver's license or state-issued ID (issued six months or more prior to application) as proof of residency; and a current photo. Images must be attached as .jpg or .gif or a similar file type. The student must request his/her most recently attended school to send his/her transcript directly to PFLAG of New Orleans. The student must also have two references send letters of recommendation on his/her behalf to PFLAG of New Orleans. All application materials (including those sent by people other than the student) must be submitted online, postmarked, or emailed by the deadline date to the address provided.
