Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually. The number of awards may vary based on the availability of funds.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must have a parent or grandparent who is/was a veteran.
  4. Must be the child and/or grandchild of a veteran.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Maine undergraduate and graduate students who have a parent or grandparent who is/was a veteran.

Application requirements for the Daniel E. Lambert Memorial Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (3)
  • Discharge paper
  • Financial Statement
Additional Information: Applicants must meet the following criteria to receive an award: show evidence of being enrolled in or attending an accredited college or vocational/technical school; be of good character (demonstrated through letters of recommendation); have demonstrated by his/her past behavior that he/she believes in the American way of life (demonstrated through letters or recommendation); and exhibit financial need (statement showing family income/expenses or IRS Form 1040 showing family adjusted gross income and/or extenuating circumstances such as multiple siblings in college). A committee of judges who are affiliated with the American Legion reviews applications and selects scholarship recipients.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online on the American Legion Headquarters Department of Maine website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a copy of his/her parent's or grandparent's military discharge, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of financial need (or a copy of IRS Form 1040 showing family adjusted gross income). The application and supporting materials must be filed on or before the deadline date and should be sent to the address provided.
