Number of Awards & Eligibility: This forgivable loan program is highly competitive. The number of loans awarded each year is limited and dependent upon available funding. Last year, there were 11 loans awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have been a Maine resident, for purposes other than education, for a minimum of two years prior to matriculation into dental school.
  4. Must be admitted to a program of dentistry.
  5. Must attend an accredited institution of dental education, leading to a D.M.D. or D.D.S degree.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This forgivable loan program is open to Maine students who are admitted to a program of dentistry at an accredited institution of dental education, leading to a D.M.D. or D.D.S degree. Recipients must practice general dentistry full time in an underserved area of Maine in an eligible dental care facility to qualify for loan forgiveness.

Additional Information: All applicants must demonstrate financial need. Finalists must participate in an interview to be scheduled by FAME. An interview does not guarantee award of a loan. To receive loan forgiveness, a recipient must practice general dentistry full time in an underserved area of Maine in an eligible dental care facility.

Award Amount: Up to $20,000 annually. The maximum aggregate amount is $80,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications are available on the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) website.In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following documents: a typed, double-spaced essay of 500 words explaining why he/she chose a dental career and describing why he/she is interested in practicing primary care dentistry in an underserved area in Maine; transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended; and Maine residency documentation/information, to include a copy of his/her signed state tax return, driver's license, and vehicle registration (must indicate if he/she does not have a vehicle).The application and all required documents must be mailed to the address provided and be postmarked by the deadline date.Please note: All applicants for this award must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
