Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 133 scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a Maine resident.
  3. Must be graduating from a Maine public high school.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must have a history of community service.
  6. Must be planning to enter his/her first year of college in September following application.

Additional Information: Criteria for scholarship selection are: academic performance/potential, a history of community service, and financial need. Each August, newly selected Mitchell Scholars and their families are invited to the Mitchell Institute's brunch. Senator George Mitchell, Mitchell Institute staff, veteran scholars and board members welcome and congratulate the newest class of Mitchell Scholars. Scholars also have the chance to attend the M.I.L.E. weekend. This activity focuses on the development of professional and leadership skills. The weekends are held once in the summer and once in the winter. Another opportunity for scholars is the summer fellowship. These fellowships provide Mitchell Scholars with stipends that enable them to take jobs that would otherwise constitute a financial hardship. In return, the scholars commit to a community service project.

Award Amount: $2,250 annually, renewable for up to three additional years for students pursuing a four-year degree or for up to one additional year for students pursuing a two-year degree.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $9,000.

Applications are available online on the Mitchell Institute website. In addition to the completed online application, the student must submit the following: a personal essay that tells something about him/her that cannot be discerned from the application materials; a copy of his/her financial aid award letter (if he/she has not received the letter at time of application, he/she may send it later); official copies of all high school transcripts (courses from senior year should be included); college transcripts if he/she has taken any college courses for credit while in high school; a recommendation from his/her high school guidance counselor or a teacher (a copy of a letter is acceptable); confirmation by May 1 of the college or university he/she plans to attend; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and college financial aid offices. The application must be completed online and all supporting documents must be mailed or emailed to the address provided. The application form must be completed by April 1. Supporting materials must be postmarked by May 1.
