Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must reside in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Montcalm or Barry counties in Michigan.
  2. Must be majoring in literature.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must demonstrate unmet financial need.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.
  7. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.

Additional Information: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships annually, primarily to Kent County students bound for or in college, or those pursuing a technical career. This scholarship, sponsored each year by the Ladies Literary Club of Grand Rapids, is provided to a local area student who is majoring in literature at a college or university in Michigan. Selection is based on academic record and financial need.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $5,000 depending on the student's unmet need and the availability of funds. Average awards are about $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications and information are available at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation website at the address provided. In addition to the online application form, an interested student must submit transcripts (official or unofficial), an essay describing his/her personal and professional aspirations, and documentation such as the FAFSA Student Aid report (SAR) that proves financial need. The Student Aid Report (SAR) is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. All applications must be submitted online by the deadline date.
