Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually varies based on the number of qualified applicants and funding levels. Generally, all eligible applicants are awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have been a resident of Mississippi for one year prior to high school/home school completion.
  3. Must plan to enroll at an eligible Mississippi college or university. A list of the eligible colleges is available on the MOSFA website.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  5. Must plan to enroll full time (12 hours per semester or 9 hours per trimester).
  6. Must be a graduating high school or home school senior OR have graduated from high/home school within the previous three years. Students must submit the application during their final year of school or before the expiration of the third school year succeeding the year of his/her high school graduation.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  8. Must have an ACT score of 29 or higher OR have an SAT score of 1280 or higher OR be a National Merit or National Achievement Finalist or Semi-Finalist.

Description: This award is available to Mississippi high school seniors/graduates who enroll as undergraduates at an eligible Mississippi college/university. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and an ACT score of 29 or higher or SAT score of 1280 or higher or be a National Merit/Achievement Finalist or Semi-Finalist.

Application requirements for the Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG) are:

  • Income tax returns
  • Driver's license
Additional Information: Created by the Mississippi Legislature this program is designed to provide financial aid assistance to Mississippi residents attending state approved public and nonprofit two-year and four-year eligible colleges and universities. The primary objective of the MESG is to provide educational opportunities for students who wish to pursue postsecondary education in the state. Students must be pursuing a first certificate, first associate's degree, or first bachelor's degree.

Award Amount: Up to $2,500 annually. The award cannot exceed tuition and required fees. Awards are renewable for up to 8 semesters (12 trimesters) or degree completion, whichever comes first. Recipients must submit a renewal application every year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,403.

Applications are available online from the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid (MOSFA) website. In addition to the online application, the student must submit the following documents: a signed copy of the first two pages of his/her parent's (or his/her, if independent) state tax return for the current tax filing year; and a copy of his/her Mississippi driver's license, unless submitted electronically during the online application. Please note: The MOSFA receives processed FAFSA results electronically for all Mississippi residents. If possible, the state tax return or Mississippi driver's license pending document will be replaced by the FAFSA results. The application must be submitted by Sept. 15. Supporting documents must be submitted by Oct. 15.
