Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually varies based on the number of eligible applicants and available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  3. Must be a legal resident of Mississippi.
  4. Must be working on a first master's degree.
  5. Must be seeking a degree in speech-language pathology, communicative disorders, or communication sciences and disorders necessary to become a licensed speech-language pathologist.
  6. Must be enrolled at a Mississippi college or university. The following institutions currently offer the approved programs of study: Jackson State University; Mississippi University for Women; the University of Southern Mississippi; and the University of Mississippi.
  7. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  8. Must have been accepted for regular enrollment in the approved program of study and enroll full time or part time (as determined by the attending institution).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Mississippi students pursuing a master's degree in a program at a Mississippi college/university leading to licensure as a speech-language pathologist are eligible. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and agree to work in a Mississippi public or charter school district as a speech-language pathologist to forgive the loan.

Application requirements for the Speech-Language Pathologist Forgivable Loan (SLPL) are:

  • Application form
  • Tax return or FAFSA
  • ID
  • Accept. letter
Additional Information: SLPL is first and foremost a loan. However, the loan can be discharged on the basis of one year's service for one year of funding received. An SLPL loan will be forgiven or discharged for recipients who complete the program of study, obtain the required license, and serve as speech-language pathologists in a public or charter school/district in Mississippi for one year for each year of funding received. Forgivable loan recipients who choose not to fulfill the service obligation will be required to repay the loan in full with 5 percent penalty and interest. SLPL recipients are not eligible for any other state aid but may apply for federal or institutional aid.

Award Amount: Students enrolling on a full-time basis may receive a maximum of two annual awards. The maximum award will not exceed the highest tuition and required fees at a state institution of higher learning. Awards for part-time students will be based on hours enrolled, but will not exceed the highest tuition and required fees for part-time students attending a state institution of higher learning. Students enrolling on a part-time basis may receive a maximum of three annual awards. Funding is available for the summer term for all students. All continuing recipients must: maintain legal residence in Mississippi; maintain satisfactory academic progress; submit a renewal application each year; maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,925.
