Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be in the final two years of undergraduate study or be a graduate student.
  3. Must be studying landscape architecture with a demonstrated interest and aptitude in the design of play environments.
  4. Must be enrolled in a LAAB (Landscape Architecture Accrediting Board)-accredited program. A list of accredited programs is available online at www.asla.org/schools.aspx.

Description: This scholarship is open to international and U.S. students who are in their final two years of undergraduate study or are in graduate programs at a LAAB-accredited institution. Students must be studying landscape architecture with a demonstrated interest and aptitude in the design of play environments.

Additional Information: The Steven G. King Play Environments Scholarship was created by Steven G. King, FASLA, founder and Chairman of Landscape Structures Inc., and the inventor of the "continuous play" concept. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize a student who has high potential in the design of play environments. This student must show an interest in the value of integrating playgrounds into parks, schools and other play environments and understand the significant social and educational value of play. Key qualities in the student receiving the scholarship are creativity, openness to innovation, and a demonstrated interest in park and playground planning.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) website. The student must apply using the online application system. Please note: There is a $5 (USD) application fee required for each LAF scholarship. Students may apply for multiple awards; however, a separate application fee is required for each. Students must submit the following supplemental application materials for all LAF scholarships: a 4 x 6, 300-ppi color photo in .jpg format (must be a head shot with a plain background); a biography of 150 words of less that describes his/her background, current educational pursuits, future plans, and any other personal interests or activities (must be in PDF, Microsoft Word, or TXT); and a resume of two pages or less that lists education, professional experience, extracurricular activities, and honors and awards (in PDF). The following materials are required for this award, in addition to all aforementioned application materials: an essay of 300-500 words describe the applicant's views on the significant social and educational value of play and the value of integrating playgrounds into play and recreation environments (in PDF); a work sample that includes a plan and details of a play environment of the applicant's design, including explanatory text (in PDF); and two letters of recommendation from current professors familiar with the applicant's demonstrated interest in park and playground planning, creativity, and openness to innovation. The student will be required to provide contact information for the recommenders, who will be sent instructions regarding submission of the letters. All application materials must be submitted by the deadline date.
