In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be of Portuguese descent OR be currently taking Portuguese language classes in high school.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher if currently enrolled in a Portuguese language class, OR 3.5 or higher if of Portuguese descent.
  4. Must be a resident of one of the nine states where LALIS (Luso American Life Insurance Society) has license. The nine states are the following: California, Connecticut, Idaho, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  6. Must be a graduating high school senior planning to enroll in trade or business school, or a junior or four-year college or university.

Description: Graduating high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher who are residents of an eligible state may apply for this award. Applicants must be of Portuguese descent or be enrolled in a Portuguese language class in high school.

Applications are available by clicking on the 'LAEF (Non-Member) Youth Scholarships' link. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: an official high school transcript; SAT and/or ACT scores, if applicable; letters of recommendation to be submitted directly from two individuals who can speak to his/her character and/or financial needs; a 'Report on Applicant' form (provided as part of the application) completed by high school staff; and a recent wallet-size photo (no copies). All application materials must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
