Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four awards offered annually. Please note: Scholarships are only awarded at the national level. Fabrics, sewing books, equipment and notions are awarded at state and national levels. State winners at the junior and senior levels advance to the national competition. Past national junior and senior winners may not compete again in the same age division.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be 24 years of age or younger at time of application.
  3. Must live in or attend school in a state that has an American Sheep Industry Association. The applicant must participate in the contest in the state where he/she lives or attends school.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must have an interest in sewing, knitting or fashion design.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to high school and undergraduate students 24 years of age or younger who have an interest in sewing, knitting or fashion design. The applicant must live in or attend school in a state that has an American Sheep Industry Association.

Application requirements for the ‘Make It With Wool’ Contest are:

  • Application form
  • Wool sample
  • $12 entry fee
Additional Information: The categories are as follows: preteens, ages 12 and under; juniors, ages 13 to 16; seniors, ages 17 to 24; adults, ages 25 and older; and 'Made for Others' (any age). The ages are as of Dec. 31 of the current year. All categories may not be available in each state.

Award Amount: $2,000 will be awarded by the American Sheep Industry Women (junior and senior winners). $1,000 will be awarded by the Mohair Council of America (junior or senior award for a complete garment made of mohair). $1,000 will be awarded by the Pendleton Woolen Mills (junior winner). $1,000 will be awarded by American Wool Council (fashion/apparel design) All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Information regarding the contest can be found on the American Sheep Industry Association website or at www.nationalmakeitwithwool.com Each applicant must contact his/her state director for information on the district contests in his/her state. Each state has a different deadline. Entry deadline is usually two weeks prior to the district contest. Entry forms are also available on the American Sheep Industry Association website. For each entry, there is an entry fee. The entry fee for all categories is $12. The applicant must attach a 5 x 5 inch sample of each wool or wool blend fabric or knitted, crocheted or woven swatch to each entry form. Detailed instructions and requirements can be found online. Please note: To be eligible, the garment must have been completed after Jan. 1. The applicant must mail three copies of the entry form. The first copy of the entry form and the entry fee must be mailed to the address provided. The applicant must mail the second copy of the entry form to his/her state director and the third copy to his/her district director.
