In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a legal U.S. resident.
  3. Must be the child, spouse, or financial dependent of someone who died as a direct result of the American Airlines Flight 587 crash on Nov. 12, 2001 in Belle Harbor, Queens, New York.
  4. Must plan to study at an approved postsecondary institution in New York State.
  5. Must be a high school graduate or older.
  6. Must enroll full-time (12 or more credits per semester).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to U.S. undergraduate students who are children, spouses and financial dependents of individuals killed as a direct result of American Airlines Flight 587’s crash in the Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens, New York on the morning of November 12, 2001. Students must be attending or planning to attend an eligible postsecondary institution in New York.

Application requirements for the NY Flight 587 Memorial Scholarship are:

  • TAP app./Payment form
Additional Information: Eligible students must be matriculated in an approved program of study and be in good academic standing and not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC or on any repayment of state awards.

Award Amount: Up to $24,250 if you are living on campus.   The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $24,250.

Applications are available from the New York State Higher Education Service Corporation (HESC) website. To apply, the student must first complete the Flight 587 Memorial Scholarship Web Supplement. Be sure to print the Web Supplement confirmation, sign it, and submit it, along with the required documentation, according to the instructions. Once the application is submitted and eligibility is established, New York State resident students must request payment by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) on the Web application. FAFSA and TAP applications and instructions are available at www.HESC.org. Students who are not residents of New York State must contact the HESC Scholarship Unit at 1-888-697-4372 to request a scholarship and grant Payment Application. The FAFSA and TAP must be completed as soon as possible after January 1st and before June 30 of the academic year for which for which aid is sought.
