In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a veteran of the armed forces of the United States who served in hostilities that occurred after February 28, 1961.
  3. Must be a legal resident of New York.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  5. Must be enrolled in an eligible program at a college or university in New York State.
  6. Must enroll as a full-time or part-time student.
  7. Must be a high school graduate or older.

Description: This award is available to U.S. students who are veterans of the armed forces of the United States who served in hostilities that occurred after February 28, 1961. Students must be studying in an approved program at an undergraduate or graduate degree-granting institution or in an approved vocational training program in New York State.

Additional Information: Eligible students must be matriculated in an approved program of study and be in good academic standing and not be in default on a student loan guaranteed by HESC or on any repayment of state awards. Approved programs are defined as undergraduate degree, graduate degree, diploma, and certificate programs at degree-granting institutions, or noncredit vocational training programs of at least 320 clock hours specifically approved by the New York State Education Department Office of College and University Evaluation. Contact the institutions Financial Aid Office to determine which programs are approved for this award. Eligible Veterans include: Vietnam Veteran who served in Indochina between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975; Persian Gulf Veteran who served in the Persian Gulf on or after August 2, 1990; Afghanistan Veterans who served in Afghanistan during hostilities on or after September 11, 2001; and Veteran of the armed forces of the United States who served in hostilities that occurred after February 28, 1961 as evidenced by receipt of an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal or a Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. Applications are available online from the New York State Higher Education Service Corporation (HESC) website. To apply, students must complete the New York State Veterans Tuition Award Supplement. Be sure to print the Web Supplement confirmation, sign it, and submit it, along with the required documentation, according to the instructions. In addition to a complete application, current New York State residents must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and TAP on the Web application. FAFSA and TAP applications and instructions are available at www.HESC.org. The FAFSA and TAP should be completed as soon as possible after January 1st. All applications must be completed by June 30 of the academic year for which an award is sought.
