Number of Awards & Eligibility: 4 Herman W. Lay Scholarships awarded annually. 10 James B. Duke Scholarships awarded annually. Please note: Last year, there were approximately 400 applications for this scholarship program.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  4. Must plan to attend Furman University in South Carolina.
  5. Typical recipients of this scholarship have an SAT score of 1500 or higher or an ACT score of 34 or higher.
  6. Must plan to attend a college or university in South Carolina.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school seniors who plan to attend Furman University in South Carolina. Recipients typically have SAT scores of 1500 or higher or ACT scores of 34 or higher.

Additional Information: The scholarship committee will consider the following factors in awarding scholarships: outstanding academic performance in high school; intellectual curiosity; potential for success at Furman; school and community involvement; leadership skills; recommendation from a community leader. The scholarship committee identifies finalists, and extends invitations for interviews in December (Early Decision candidates) and late March (Regular Decision candidates). Students will be notified by mail.

Award Amount: The Herman W. Lay Scholarship provides full tuition, weighted average room costs, board, and student fees (approximately $60,000 per year). The scholarship is renewable for three additional years. The James B. Duke Scholarship provides full tuition (approximately $45,000 per year). The scholarship is renewable for three additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $196,000.

To apply for this scholarship, the student must have applied for admission to Furman University and must also submit the 'Merit Scholarships Application', available online on the Furman University website. Admissions application information is available on the Furman University website by clicking on the 'Apply' link. As part of the scholarship application, the student must submit four short essays, two of 500 words or less, one of 400 words or less, and one of 300 words or less. Topics are listed on the scholarship application. In addition to the scholarship application, the student must request that a letter of recommendation be sent to the selection committee from a community leader (someone from outside his/her high school). The letter must be sent to the attention of Elizabeth 'Libby' Weith at the address provided. All scholarship application materials are due by Jan. 15 for full scholarship consideration.
