Description: This award is for U.S. high school seniors who reside in Tennessee, Arkansas or Mississippi who plan to attend an accredited institution of higher education. Students must submit an essay of 900 to 1,000 words to qualify.

Additional Information: The Bird Dog Foundation, Inc. has established a scholarship fund to promote interest in wildlife conservation and related subjects. An annual college scholarship essay contest sponsored by The Bird Dog Foundation, Inc. has been in effect for several years now. This contest was created in the hopes that it would enhance scholarly training and education in wildlife and wildlife conservation as well as give financial aid for tuition the college-bound student. An independent, outside panel of judge(s) selected by The Bird Dog Foundation, Inc. will determine the final winner. Essays will be judged on the following criteria: quality and suitability of content, grammar, originality, depth of research, composition skills and adherence to the contest submission instructions. A copy of the first-place winning essay, the student's name, and high school photo may be considered for publication in a national magazine, and the student's name and possibly his/her photo will be submitted to local newspapers for publication as announcements.

Award Amount: The first-place winner will receive $1,500. The second-place winner will receive $1,000. All awards are offered annually and are non-renewable. The tuition scholarship awards are made payable only to an accredited college, university, or other bonafide institution of the student's choice upon receipt of proof of registration/enrollment at that institution.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

Information is available online on The Bird Dog Foundation, Inc website. This is an essay contest. The student must prepare an essay of 900 to 1,000 words which must be written on a topic selected by The Bird Dog Foundation, Inc. Essays should be typed and double spaced. It is recommended that appropriate font sizes and styles be used (for example, Arial or Times New Roman) with font sizes no larger than 12 or 14. The student must use a minimum of five sources for his/her bibliography, which should follow college guidelines and Modern Language Association (MLA). Websites may be used, but a minimum of three of the cited sources must be books or periodicals. If a periodical is cited, the student must include the issue number, volume number and/or publication date for identification. Citations throughout the body of the essay should be numbered only and then the corresponding reference on the bibliography page should be numbered and the reference cited in full there. No titles should be listed in the body of the essay, only at the end on the bibliography page. A cover sheet must accompany the essay and include: the title of the essay, the student's name and complete home mailing address, home telephone number including the area code, email address (if available), the name and address of the student's high school, and the date the essay was created. Students must submit their original essays to the Bird Dog Foundation to the attention of the Education Coordinator. Essays may be dropped off in person or mailed or shipped, emailed or faxed. If mailed, all essays must be postmarked by the deadline date. All essays must be submitted before midnight on the deadline date.
