Are There College Scholarships in Texas?

There are college scholarships in Texas for residents and Texas students attending university in the Lone Star state. Texas also boasts some of the highest high school graduation rates at 90% in the United States, according to the NCES. So it’s no surprise there are a variety of scholarships for high school seniors in Texas.

According to the NCES, TX also has more affordable tuition for its public colleges. As such, scholarships for college students in TX are plentiful too. Once you graduate, the state of Texas may appeal for your job search. It is home to at least ten largest companies like Pizza Hut, Dell, American Airlines, Whole Foods and AT&T. 

You might also search by higher education levels (undergraduate, graduate, professional). Some common scholarship providers in the Lone Star State are nonprofits and special interest groups. Some companies and professional associations based in TX offer awards to Texas college students. Also, these local religious groups and governments also provide financial aid.

Community College Scholarships In Texas

Texas has 155 community colleges, trade and career schools. Tuition and fees at a two year public college in TX is lower than the national average. According to the NCES, in state students pay an average tuition and fees of $2,099 per year or $6,100 per year for out of state. 

Southwest Texas Junior College is a public community college serving 11 of southwest TX counties. They offer a range of campus and online associate degrees and certificates. Southwest Texas Junior College offers about 45 student scholarships. Many of these base decisions on high school students’ grades and ACT/SAT scores. To keep the funds going, one must enroll for at least 12 semester hours and maintain their grade point average at 2.5 or higher. 

Scholarships for Graduate Students in Texas

If you are pursuing a master’s degree, MBA, PhD, law or medical school in TX, you may find scholarships. Many graduate schools offer them on the basis of need or merit. These funds are useful, especially if you already have student loans to repay. If you are pursuing a specific field, use it to refine your search.

TX A&M partners with the Hertz Foundation to offer this prestigious fellowship. It includes up to five years of funding or up to $250,000. Recipients also have the freedom to innovate and research. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizen/eligible non citizen and be STEM grad students.

University of Houston offers over 100 merit awards through the MBA Bauer Excellence Initiative. From their business school, these go to qualified MBA students who study full time. The award pays up to $10,000. Selectees from out of state may qualify for in state rates. There is no separate application form. But only admitted students may receive the funds.
