Are There College Scholarships in Texas?

There are college scholarships in Texas for residents and Texas students attending university in the Lone Star state. Many students choose to study in the Lone Star State for its Tex Mex, BBQ, and bold spirit. Not to mention its diverse landscape that include big cities like Houston area and San Antonio.

Texas also boasts some of the highest high school graduation rates at 90% in the United States, according to the NCES. So it’s no surprise there are a variety of scholarships for high school seniors in Texas.

According to the NCES, TX also has more affordable tuition for its public colleges. As such, scholarships for college students in TX are plentiful too. Once you graduate, the state of Texas may appeal for your job search. It is home to at least ten largest companies like Pizza Hut, Dell, American Airlines, Whole Foods and AT&T. 

When you are looking for student scholarship opportunities, many of the state’s two and four year schools offer them. If you are majoring in a specific field, it may also help you pinpoint possible funds. 

You might also search by higher education levels (undergraduate, graduate, professional). Here are a few other common providers for Texans.

What Texas Colleges Offer Scholarships?

There are numerous scholarships for undergraduates in Texas. Rice University, University of Texas at Austin, and Texas A&M provide scholarship awards based on merit and financial need. TX is home to 121 four year colleges, public and private. Many also offer financial aid packages to new and current students. Moreover, award amounts and eligibility vary. 

According to the NCES, the average in state tuition and fees at a four year public college was $17,799 per year. If you are enrolling from out of state, tuition is slightly higher at $23,511. 

If you choose a private institution, costs tend to be higher than the national average from a NCES report. Tuition at these schools is around $41,979.

If you are looking for Texas full ride scholarships, some of the state’s private colleges offer them. Full ride awards usually fund tuition, mandatory fees and a modest stipend. In comparison, full tuition awards may cover both in state and out of state tuition. Both scholarships tend to be merit based.

Rice University

A four year accredited private research university, Rice’s tree lined campus is in Houston. Known as a medium size school, it serves 7282 students many of who study online. All admitted freshman have a chance for a merit award or a financial need based award called the Rice Investment. You may need a Free Application for Federal Student Aid on file.

Phil Layton Award of Excellence in the Arts range in award amounts from $2,000 to $4,000. They are for undergraduates involved in the performing, visual or written arts. Herschel M. Rich Invention Award is for engineering students. For this award, you must come up with an original invention. There are up to two awards of $7,500 each. 

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M is in College Station, TX. It is the state’s first 4 year public institution of higher learning. Known now for research and degree programs at all levels, TX A&M has a student body of over 8,300. Explore majors like nursing, veterinary medicine, criminal justice and business admin. Many students receive some kind of aid through scholarships, grants, loans, waivers and campus jobs. 

There are several 4 year academic scholarships. These are available to incoming freshmen admitted for the fall only. Award amounts range from $2,500 to $3,000. Eligible applicants must maintain a 3.5 overall GPA. Each scholarship includes a one time $1,000 sum for use in an approved study abroad experiences.

Each year, Texas A&M offers 50 full tuition scholarships for their Brockman Scholars Program. These are generous- tuition and fees in full for both in/out of state students. Also, a sum for room and board, transportation, books and supplies, and one credit-bearing, university run overseas study opportunity.

The program is open for both undergraduate students and grad students. It supports four years of undergraduate studies in an approved STEM major. Science, technology, engineering, math. And, one year MS in Business for a total of 5 years of study. 

Do Community Colleges in Texas Offer Scholarships?

Many of them offer scholarships for Texans and other types of financial aid to help pay for college. Securing these funds may bring an associate degree, certificate or diploma within reach. Texas has 155 community colleges, trade and career schools. Tuition and fees at a two year public college in TX is lower than the national average. According to the NCES, in state students pay an average tuition and fees of $2,099 per year or $6,100 per year for out of state. 

Southwest Texas Junior College is a public community college serving 11 of southwest TX counties. They offer a range of campus and online associate degrees and certificates. Southwest Texas Junior College offers about 45 scholarships. Many of these base decisions on high school students’ grades and ACT/SAT scores. To keep the funds going, one must enroll for at least 12 semester hours and maintain their grade point avg. at 2.5 or higher. 

Are There Scholarships for Graduate Students in Texas?

If you are pursuing a master’s degree, MBA, PhD, law or medical school in TX, you may find scholarships. Many graduate schools offer them on the basis of need or merit. These funds are useful, especially if you already have student loans to repay. If going for a degree in a specific field, use it to refine your search.

TX A&M partners with the Hertz Foundation to offer this prestigious fellowship. It includes up to five years of funding or up to $250,000. Recipients also have the freedom to innovate and research. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizen/eligible non citizen and be STEM grad students.

University of Houston offers over 100 merit awards through the MBA Bauer Excellence Initiative. From their business school, these go to qualified MBA students who study full time. The award pays up to $10,000. Selectees from out of state may qualify for in state rates. Also, a two year subscription to the Wall Street Journal. There is no separate application form. But only admitted students may receive the funds.

Undergraduate students residing in one of the 26 northernmost counties of the Texas panhandle OR those who are planning to attend an eligible Texas college are eligible for this award. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and plan to enroll full time in an accounting program.

Graduating high school seniors who are residents of 26 of the northernmost counties in the Texas panhandle and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible for this award. Students must be active church members and attend Amarillo College or West Texas A&M University.

Beral Hance Memorial Scholarship Fund

High school seniors residing and graduating from a high school in Castro County, Texas are eligible for this award. Students must enroll full time at Texas Tech University or Texas A&M University and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher while in college.
