Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two or more awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  3. Must be planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student.
  4. Must have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation. A grade point average lower than 3.0 will be accepted as long as an explanation is provided.
  5. Must have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism.
  6. Must be a Utah resident.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Utah high school seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties though some form of activism are eligible for this scholarship.

Additional Information: Past national scholarship winners were recognized for a wide variety of civil liberties activism including: starting an organization to inform students and faculty about high school military recruitment efforts that targeted students of color; working to defend free speech and political expression in the school newspaper; creating a documentary about the internment of Japanese Americans; fighting for racial and socioeconomic justice in area high schools; advocating for comprehensive sex education and youth rights; and fighting against the harassment and bullying faced by gay students by starting a gay-straight alliance.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Applications are available online on the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Utah website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: his/her most recent transcript; an essay of 1,000 words or less describing his/her civil liberties activism, including his/her understanding of what it means to be a civil liberties activist, specific examples of how he/she has demonstrated his/her dedication to civil liberties, challenges that he/she had to overcome in doing so, and how he/she showed leadership in his/her actions; and a completed recommendation form (included with the application). The application and all supporting documents must be submitted to the address listed by the deadline date.
