Number of Awards & Eligibility: Six awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be a legal resident of Washington, Oregon, or Idaho.
  5. Must have obtained a student pilot certificate and provide a copy of the certificate.
  6. Must use the scholarship for any category, class, or phase of flight certification training including light-sport, recreational, private, and relevant ratings, including instrument, multiengine, commercial, and airline transport professional.
  7. Must be a member of Women in Aviation, International (WAI) by Nov. 1, and that membership must remain current through March. Please note: Both men and women are eligible to join WAI.

Additional Information: All scholarships, unless otherwise noted, will be awarded at the Annual International Women in Aviation Conference. Attendance at the conference is not required to receive a scholarship, but it is encouraged. Please note: Students may only receive one scholarship per year.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, non-renewable. Funds will be paid directly to the flight school of the recipient's choice and must be used within 12 months of the award. Recipients must send a short email each month of less than 300 words to the Blackburn family describing their previous month's flight highlights, a copy of flight logbook pages, and expense summary until the $10,000 is used.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $60,000.

Applications are available on the Women in Aviation, International (WAI) website. A complete application packet must include three stapled sets of the following (one original and two copies): a completed application form; two recommendation letters of one page each; a 500-word typed, descriptive essay; a professional resume; and copies of all aviation licenses and medical certificates, and the last three pages of the applicant's pilot logbook, if applicable. Please note: The descriptive essay and resume should address the topics listed online at www.wai.org/education/guidelines.cfm. A separate application packet must be submitted for each scholarship for which the student wishes to apply. Students may apply for a maximum of two scholarships per year. Application packets must be submitted online or sent to the address provided and be postmarked by the deadline date.
