Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately five awards are offered each year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a graduating high school senior.
  2. Must apply to and plan to attend American University.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.8 or higher.

Description: Established in 2009, the FDDS program offers American University's most prestigious, merit-based scholarship. It includes tuition, housing, meal plan, books, mandatory fees, and public transportation. The award goes to exceptional incoming first-year student leaders committed to multidimensional excellence.

Application requirements for the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars (FDDS) Program are:

Additional Information: Preference will be given to first-generation student leaders. The most competitive applicants will have a minimum 3.8 GPA (unweighted) or 4.0 GPA (weighted). Submission of ACT or SAT scores are optional. Notification of admission to the Frederick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program will not be released until April 1, regardless of your application deadline. Historically underrepresented minority students and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Award Amount: The FDDS program offers scholarships that provide full tuition, mandatory fees, books, U-Pass, room, and board. Undergraduate tuition is normally no more than $24,259.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $121,295.
