Additional Information: Washington University set up the John B. Ervin Scholars Program with four pillars in mind: academic excellence, leadership, community service, and diversity. They did this to honor John B. Ervin. He was a nationally renowned black educator, scholar, and author. John B Ervin also committed his life to the education of all people. In 1968, Dr. Ervin became dean of the School of Continuing Education at Washington University, the first African-American dean at the university. This scholarship gives full tuition plus a $2,500 annual stipend. In return, recipients take part in each part of the program. This includes orientation to WashU, meetings with university and community leaders, academic support and advising, and events with other Ervin Scholars and the program’s administrators. Ervin Scholars are also expected to engage in organizations and activities on campus and in-service projects in the community.

Award Amount: This award provides for full tuition and fees and is valued at approximately $56,300 per year. Students will also receive an annual stipend of $2,500. Awards are renewable for up to four years of study so long as the student maintains the scholarship’s requirements.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $58,800.
