Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

This award is for U.S. students.
Must be 15 to 20 years old.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must graduate from an accredited high school in Georgia.
Must have a father, mother or natural guardian who is a full-time paid member of the police, fire, or sheriff's departments in Georgia (volunteer fire department members also qualify), OR a full-time public safety officer (police/fire) in Georgia. Children of administrative staff; DHS, FBI, and other federal employees; reserve officers; part-time sheriff's deputies; and retired, deceased, or disabled employees do not qualify.
Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for Georgia high school seniors who have a father, mother or natural guardian who is a member of the police or fire department, or a full-time paid or volunteer member of the police department, located in Georgia AND is a full-time active employee, not on disability. Students must be 15 to 20 years old.

Additional Information: Awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation, and the essay. The score is based on the following: grade average, 25 points; SAT/ACT scores, 30 points; essay, 25 points; academic prizes, awards, hobbies, school and outside extracurricular activities, 20 points.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable. The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in January for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available on the Georgia Electronic Life Safety and Systems Association (GELSSA) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: an essay of 500-1,000 words that explains 'What it means to me to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community'; proof of enrollment in high school via an official transcript sent by the high school (if transcripts cannot be provided, alternate means of providing enrollment will be accepted on an individual basis); proof of acceptance to a college or university (letter acceptable); proof of his/her parent's occupation (ID or supervisory letter acceptable); copies of his/her SAT/ACT scores submitted by the high school (may be included on transcripts); a resume listing academic prizes, awards, hobbies, extracurricular activities, and work history; and letters of recommendation from a high school counselor, teacher, or other outside agency which verifies participation in extracurricular activities and speaks of the student's character. Applications must be submitted online by the deadline date.
