In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be an immigrant or first generation American.
  2. Must reside in the Greater New York City area.

Description: The We the People Magazine Scholarship is available for immigrants and first-generation Americans who reside in the New York City area.

Application requirements for the We the People Magazine Scholarship are:

  • Art
  • poetry
  • or prose submission
Additional Information: Students should reside in the NYC area and be either American immigrants or first generation Americans. Students should be able to read and write their or their parent's native language fluently, and also be able to provide an English translation of their application.

Award Amount: Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $1,000 and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

To apply for this contest, students must submit an original piece of poetry, prose, or art that responds to the following topic prompt: "Tell us about what being an American means to you." In modern times, society often places individuals in preset categories based on their identity. In your response, explore how being American and being associated with the stereotypes of America affects your identity as an individual. How do you interpret your Amercian facet? Are you proud to be an American? Why or why not? Do you feel as “American” as other individuals who might have a longer history in the country? Are there quintessential examples of Americans? All submissions must be sent to [email protected] by December 15th, 2019 at 11:59 EDT.
