Number of Awards & Eligibility: 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  4. Must be a resident of South Carolina.
  5. Must plan to attend Furman University in South Carolina.
  6. Must demonstrate high academic achievement.
  7. Must demonstrate a strong commitment to civic leadership and community service.
  8. Must attend a university in South Carolina.

Description: This scholarship is available for South Carolina high school seniors who plan to attend Furman University. Students must demonstrate high academic achievement and a strong commitment to civic leadership and community service.

Application requirements for the Furman University John D. Hollingsworth Scholarship are:

  • Application form

  • Official Transcript
  • Admissions application
  • Interview (finalists only)
Additional Information: The scholarship committee will consider the following factors in awarding scholarships: outstanding academic performance in high school; intellectual curiosity; potential for success at Furman; school and community involvement; leadership skills; recommendation from a community leader. The scholarship committee identifies finalists, and extends invitations for interviews in December (Early Decision candidates) and late March (Regular Decision candidates). Students will be notified by mail.

Award Amount: $35,000 annually, renewable for up to three years if the student maintains a grade point average of 2.7 or higher. The award also includes a study abroad scholarship of $2,000, a $3,000 stipend for a summer internship or research experience, and the opportunity to participate in Public Leadership Seminars.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $700,000.
