Number of Awards & Eligibility: Seven awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must self-identify as either a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender person.
  5. Must be a resident of San Diego County, California.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. and international students, residing in San Diego County, who self-identify as a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender person. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and must enroll at an accredited college or university during the academic year following application for this award.

Application requirements for the PFLAG San Diego Chapter Scholarships are:

Additional Information: PFLAG San Diego awards multiple scholarships to local area LGBT students every year. These awards are designed to encourage higher education among those LGBT students who demonstrate academice excellence, unmet financial need, and a commitment toward social equality and acceptance. This year, the following named awards will be offered: the John Bessemer Memorial Scholarship; Rob Benzon Memorial Scholarship; Stephen G. Bowersox Memorial Scholarship; Richard P. Geyser Memorial Ethics Scholarship at the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation; John McCusker Memorial Scholarship; Raytheon STEM Scholarship for students with science, technology, engineering, and math majors; and the Mary Wagner Memorial Scholarship.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available at the San Diego Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) website. In addition to a completed application form, students must submit the following items: one letter of reference; an essay of up to two pages on the topic listed for the award the student is applying for; a copy of a recent academic transcript including all courses taken; and a short statement of financial need. Students interested in applying for multiple scholarships may also submit multiple essays for consideration in each competition. All application materials and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date.
