Number of Awards & Eligibility: Twelve awards offered annually. A minimum of one award will be presented to a student from each of the following areas: Omaha metro area or southwest Iowa; Lincoln metro area or greater Nebraska; The Kansas Plain; and South Dakota.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a high school junior or senior at time of application.
  4. Must be a resident of Nebraska, South Dakota, The Kansas Plain, or southwest Iowa. Eligible counties in Iowa are: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, and Shelby. All counties of Kansas are eligible except: Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami and Wyandotte).
  5. Must participate in community service.

Description: This scholarship is available for high school juniors and seniors who are residents of Nebraska, South Dakota, The Kansas Plains, or southwest Iowa. Students must be nominated by a high school principal, guidance counselor, teacher, or community leader.

Additional Information: Scholarship recipients will be selected by three independent panels of judges from the academic and business communities in metro Omaha, metro Lincoln and metro Sioux Falls and will be awarded based on the following judging criteria: academic, 5 percent; leadership, 20 percent; community service, 20 percent; recommendations/nomination, 20 percent; and essay content, 35 percent. The names of the award recipients will be announced by the Better Business Bureau in April. The students will be officially recognized at one of the BBB's Integrity Award luncheons held in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska in September. Please note: Students who enter the competition as juniors but are not recipients may apply again as seniors.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarships must be applied toward tuition and/or room and board. Scholarships will be distributed directly to the recipient's postsecondary school upon verification of his/her enrollment.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Foundation website. Please note: Students must follow the application instructions listed in the 'Application Guide' document available on the BBB website to ensure that their applications are considered. All required forms are available on the BBB website. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a nomination form completed by his/her principal, guidance counselor, teacher, or community leader; a description of his/her school-related extracurricular activities, including awards/honors and offices held; a description of any work experiences, community activities, and/or organizations in which he/she has participated, including awards/honors and offices held; two letters of recommendation from school officials, religious institutions, employers, or community leaders (in addition to the nomination form); a description of his/her postsecondary education plans and any awards received relating to academic achievement; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript and/or official copies of his/her ACT or SAT scores; and a single-spaced, 500-word essay in 12-point font with 1" margins that addresses the topic listed in the 'Application Guide' document on the BBB website. All application materials must be labeled and typed on separate 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper. The application and all supplemental materials must be submitted in one package to the appropriate address based on his/her residency. Mailing addresses are listed on the 'Application Guide' document on the BBB website. All entries must be postmarked by the deadline date.
