Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered annually varies according to the number of eligible students. In 2013-2014 (the most recent year for which data is available), there were 456 awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be enlisted in the Kansas Air/Army National Guard. The student must be a non-commissioned officer who has less than 20 years of service.
  3. Must attend one of the following: an accredited independent college or university located in Kansas; a Kansas state university; Washburn University; a Kansas community college; or a Kansas state technical college.
  4. Must have a GED or high school diploma AND must not have already obtained a bachelor's degree.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. students who are members of a Kansas Air/Army National Guard unit and planning to attend a postsecondary institution in Kansas. Students must have a GED or high school diploma to qualify for this assistance, and cannot already have a bachelor's degree.

Additional Information: Recipients must agree to complete their current service obligation to the Kansas National Guard plus three months of service for each semester of assistance received. If a recipient is unable to fulfill the service obligation, they will be responsible for repaying the amount of the scholarship that they received.

Award Amount: Awards are for 100 percent of tuition and fees that lead to the award of a certificate, diploma, or degree upon satisfactory completion of course work requirements. The maximum rate of the award is not to exceed the maximum rate that would be charged by the state educational institutions for enrollment. Please note: The award amount is subject to a number of factors, including the funds available, the number of applicants, and the student's federal tuition assistance.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available online from the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) website. The student must complete the online State of Kansas Student Aid Application. The student must also have Form 6006A (available on the KBOR website) signed by his/her National Guard unit commander. The application and form should be submitted by the priority deadline of May 1. The final deadline for the fall semester is August 31 and the final deadline for spring is January 31.
