In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a surviving spouse or child of an eligible military member.
  4. Must be the family member of a fallen active-duty or veteran member of the United States Armed Forces.
  5. Must be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university to pursue a trade or professional certificate, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, graduate, post-graduate, or doctoral degree.

Description: This scholarship is open to surviving spouses and children of fallen active-duty or veteran members of the United States Armed Forces. The student must be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university in the upcoming semester to pursue a trade or professional certificate, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, graduate, post-graduate or doctoral degree; the student must also demonstrate financial need.

Additional Information: This Scholarship opportunity is awarded through the Veterans United Foundation (VUF). The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization made up of financial contributions from the employees who work for Veterans United Home Loans. Awards will be given based on the following criteria: the application essay; financial need (as determined by the awards team based on the FAFSA); community, church, sports, or school involvement or achievements; and any additional information that the student shared on the application. Winners of the scholarship will be contacted directly via email or phone and asked for a series of documentation to verify enrollment. Winners will be notified by Nov. 9 for the fall scholarship cycle.

Award Amount: $5,000 to $20,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications are available on the Veterans United Foundation (VUF) website. As part of the online application, the student must provide the following materials: a 700-word essay telling his/her story, explaining who he/she is, where his/her life has taken him/her and what he/she hopes to pursue through his/her college education and beyond; an appropriate and professional looking photo of himself/herself; and a signed copy of the Release Form (available for download within the application). Please note: The student must also be prepared to provide a copy of his/her FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices.
