Most students know that they must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out their Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is a relative measurement of the student's ability to pay for school, and this number is often used to determine the amount of federal and state assistance available. This is a good start, but the true Cost of Attendance (COA) is often different than the sticker price. Most students have expenses beyond tuition, including room and board, books, and other costs. Before turning to student loans, students with financial need can look for scholarships to help close the gap between their EFC and COA. Tennessee HOPE Access Grant

This award is available to Tennessee high school seniors who are planning to attend an eligible postsecondary institution in Tennessee. The student must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher and a SAT score or 860-970 or an ACT score of 18-20. The student's parents' (or independent student's and spouse's) adjusted gross income must be $36,000 or less.

This award is available to Mississippi undergraduate students who are enrolled at or planning to enroll at an eligible Mississippi college or university. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and an ACT score of 15 or higher (or SAT score of 720 or higher), and must receive less than the full Federal Pell Grant as determined by the completion FAFSA.
