In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be African American, Latino/Latina, Asian American, or Native American.
  3. Must plan to attend Colby College in Maine.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a graduating high school senior or incoming transfer student.
  6. Must attend a college or university in Maine.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. high school seniors and undergraduate students who are planning to attend Colby College. Students must demonstrate scholastic strength and leadership potential and must be African American, Latino/Latina, Asian American, or Native American.

Additional Information: Ralph J. Bunche was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a distinguished statesman and diplomat, and a champion of world peace. The first African American undersecretary of the United Nations, he received an honorary doctorate from Colby College in 1952 and later was a Colby parent. In 1979, Colby College established the Ralph J. Bunche Scholarship program to recognize students who demonstrate scholastic strength and leadership potential and who are African American, Latino/Latina, Asian American, or Native American.

Award Amount: Opportunity grants for up to $3,000.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $9,000.

Program information is available online on the Colby College website. To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply for admission to Colby College. All students applying for admission must complete the Common Application. Additional materials vary depending on whether the student is a first-year applicant or transfer applicant. Admissions materials must be submitted by the following dates for first-year applicants: early decision I, Nov. 15; early decision II and regular decision, Jan. 1.
