Number of Awards & Eligibility: Multiple awards are offered annually through the general scholarship fund. In past years, two general awards were given. One scholarship will be given annually through the Margaret Louise Fassino Smith Memorial Scholarship fund.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Washington County, RI.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be 21 years of age or older.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be enrolled or registered in an educational or job skills training program and working toward her first degree (associate's or bachelor's) or certificate.
  7. Must meet one of the following criteria: be a displaced homemaker or single mother wanting to further her education; need skills to re-enter the job market; be seeking skills to improve her job status; or be seeking assistance with support services so she can pursue her career goals.

Description: This scholarship is available for female Washington County (RI) residents who are 21 years of age or older. Students must be enrolled or registered in an educational or job skills training program and working toward their first degree (associate or bachelor's) or certificate.

Additional Information: Preference will be given to highly motivated, low-income single women with children who need further education or training to become self-supporting. Eligible students must be able to demonstrate financial need.

Award Amount: The general scholarship fund award amounts vary annually and may be renewable. Awards are made upon proof of enrollment, and payments are sent directly to the institution for which aid is requested, not to the scholarship recipient.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $14,600.

Applications are available online on the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) of South County website, or by emailing Shelley Perry at the address provided. In addition to a completed application, the student must submit the following: a resume or list of activities that she participates in, including positions held, dates of participation, estimated time spent on each activity, and any special honors receive; an essay of 500 words or less discussing the topics listed on the application; her most recent official transcript; one letter of recommendation; her financial aid award letter, if applicable; and a copy of her final SAR (Student Aid Report), if applicable. The SAR is generated by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The student may optionally also submit a one-page listing of 300 words or less describing any unusual personal, financial, or family circumstances that she feels warrants special attention by the selection committee. The application and all supplemental materials must be submitted in one package to the address provided by the deadline date.
