Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of recipients for this program varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of West Virginia.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be enrolled on a part-time basis.
  5. Must attend an eligible community college, state college or university, or independent college or university in West Virginia.
  6. Must have not been enrolled in a high school diploma program, other than a general education development (GED) program, for two years or more prior to applying.
  7. Must qualify as an independent student according to current federal aid criteria. To qualify as an independent student the applicant must meeting one of the following: be 24 years of age or older by December 31; be an orphan or ward of the court or was a ward of the court until he/she reached the age of 18; be a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States; be married; or not be claimed as a dependent on anyone's tax returns (including the student's parents) for two years and provide evidence that he/she is self supporting for those two years.
  8. Must demonstrate financial need. Financial need is determined by the federal methodology and derived from completing the FAFSA.

Additional Information: The purpose of the Higher Education Adult Part-Time Student (HEAPS) Grant Program is to encourage and enable needy West Virginia students, who have been out of high school for two years or more and who desire to continue their educations on a part-time basis at the postsecondary level. Recipients are selected each year by institutions based on the student's eligibility and the availability of funds. Student's should contact his/her institution for additional information.

Award Amount: For students enrolled at a public college or university, the maximum grant is based on the actual per credit hour tuition and required fees charged. For students enrolled at other eligible institutions, the award is based upon the average per credit hour tuition and required fees charged by public undergraduate institutions of higher education. Total aid, including a HEAPS award, may not exceed the recipient's total cost of education. Awards are renewable providing the student maintain satisfactory academic progress and re-applies each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $948.
