Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies according to the amount of funds available. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maryland.
  3. Must attend a two- or four-year Maryland college or university, or certain private career schools.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must enroll as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student.

Description: This award is available to Maryland undergraduate and graduate students who are planning to attend a Maryland college or university. Students must demonstrate financial need and file the FAFSA.

Application requirements for the Maryland Senatorial Scholarship are:

Additional Information: All applicants for this award must demonstrate financial need. Students must also take the SAT or ACT unless they graduated from high school five or more years ago; have earned 24 college credit hours; or are attending a community college or a private career school.

Award Amount: Award amounts range between $400 and $11,800 annually, renewable for up to three additional years of full-time study (12+ credits per semester) or up to seven additional years of part-time study (6-11 credits per semester). Awards will be renewed automatically as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress at his/her college. Please note: The Senatorial Scholarship may be held with all other state awards. The total annual dollar amount of all state scholarship awards may not exceed the cost of attendance, as determined by the school's financial aid office, or $19,000, whicever is less.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,800.

Program information is available on the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) website. To apply, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The FAFSA is available beginning on Jan. 1 each year, and must be filed by March 1 for consideration for this program. Please note: If the student's Senator makes his/her own awards, it is the student's responsibility to contact the legislator for further application instructions. Contact information for state senators and delegates can be obtained by calling the Board of Supervisors of Elections corresponding to the applicant's county. Students can also visit the MHEC website for Senator contact information.
