Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately fifteen awards offered annually.

  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  3. Must be of Cuban heritage.
  4. Must have unmet financial need.
  5. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  6. Must reside in the U.S.

Additional Information: In 1996, the Mas family established a scholarship whose purpose is to advance the education of talented young Cuban and Cuban American men and women, furthering their commitment to promoting the benefits and opportunities that can be garnered through hard work in a free society. Since its establishment, over 160 students have been able to obtain a college education thanks to the Mas Family Scholarship, making it the largest scholarship program for students of Cuban descent. Many of these students have gone on to become leaders in their respective communities, reflecting the potential of what individuals can achieve given the freedom and opportunity to do so. The Mas Family Scholarships are an initiative of the Jorge Mas Canosa Freedom Foundation, whose mission is the advancement and preservation of Jorge Mas Canosa’s legacy: love of God, family and homeland; the dignity of human life; the ideals of freedom and democracy; and the education of future generations in the appreciation of these ideals.

Award Amount: Up to $8,000 annually, renewable for an additional three years depending on academic performance and continued financial need.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $32,000.

Applications and information are available from the Mas Family Foundation website at the address provided. In addition to the online application form, applicants must submit docmentation and information related to verifying eligibility. Additional documentation includes: a brief personal statement, a copy of official academic transcripts, a copy of the student's most recent FAFSA report, proof of Cuban heritage, and proof of admission in an accredited college or university. Students must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. All applications and supporting documents must be postmarked or received by the deadline date.
