Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number and amount of scholarships varies each year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Must be between the ages of 17 and 25.
  3. Must demonstrate unmet financial need.
  4. Must reside in or attend college/university in Houston, TX.
  5. Must identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
  6. This award is for U.S. and international students.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for Houston-area residents who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher and demonstrate unmet financial need.

Additional Information: The Out for Education program, known as the PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship until 2013, offers a scholarship program to assist worthy gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth in the Houston area in pursuing a college education. The scholarship program is for students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement while in high school or college. In addition to helping provide for higher education, the Foundation hopes that our scholarship recipients will provide positive role models for other youth who cannot be open about their orientation, and encourages the scholarship recipients to volunteer their time with GLBT community groups.

Award Amount: The total amount distributed would be $100,000 over the four years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $100,000.

Applications are available at the Out for Education website. In addition to a completed application form and essay responses, students must submit two letters of reference - one from a teacher or faculty member, and one from an individual who is familiar with the applicant's community service efforts. All application materials and supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline date.
