Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a currently enrolled freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior who will be registered as an undergraduate in the fall of the year in which he/she is applying.
  4. Must be enrolled in an ABET-accredited program in civil engineering or a related field.
  5. Must be a student member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in good standing at time of application and award.

Description: Current undergraduate students who are enrolled in an ABET-accredited program in civil engineering and are members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) are eligible for this award. Academic merit and financial need will be considered in award selection.

Additional Information: Through the generosity of Robert B.B. and Josephine N. Moorman, a scholarship bequest was established in 2008 as a memorial to Robert B.B. Moorman who was a civil engineering professor at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in Brooklyn, NY. All applications will be reviewed by the Society Awards Committee or its designee for recommendation to the Executive Committee for final approval. The committee reserves the right to recommend that no award be made in a particular year if no meritorious applications are received. Selection is based on the applicant's justification of award, educational plans, academic performance and standing, potential for development, leadership capacity, ASCE activities, and financial need. Recipients will be notified of selection in May by the Executive Director of the Society.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Funds should be used for tuition and tuition-related expenses and will be disbursed in the fall term. Previous recipients of these scholarships are eligible to apply in any succeeding competition for these awards provided the other requirements of eligibility are satisfied.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: a personal essay of no more than 500 words highlighting why he/she chose to become a civil engineer, specific ASCE Student Chapter involvement, any special financial needs, and long-term goals and plans; a detailed annual budget documenting the extent of financial need by indicating expenses and income from all sources; two or more sealed letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a faculty member; one sealed official transcript (enclosed or sent directly by registrar's office); and a one-page resume including honors, activities, organizations, ASCE activities (including any offices held), and any work experience. All application materials should be mailed in one packet to the address provided. All materials must be received by the deadline date.
