Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. *Please note: The number of recipients for this program varies according to the number of students meeting the eligibility requirements in any given year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must plan to enroll full time.
  5. Must be a high school senior at time of application.
  6. Must complete a minimum of 50 hours of community service with Tzu Chi or another charitable organization.

Description: This award is available for currently enrolled high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and plan to enroll full-time in an accredited college or university.

Additional Information: Tzu Chi Scholars is a scholarship program funded by Tzu Chi Foundation to recognize and assist outstanding high school graduates to reduce financial burdens for college. Tzu Chi Scholars are selected on the basis of their financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement. A home visit and interview will be part of the application process for all semi-finalists. Scholars for the current year scholarship program will be announced via mail and awards will be presented at the Scholarship Award Ceremony in the nearest Tzu Chi Foundation Regional Office.

Award Amount: Up to $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

The scholarship application is available on the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, U.S.A. website, beginning in January. In addition to the completed application, the following materials must be submitted: an official high school transcript; copies of the applicant's or parents'/guardian's '1040 Income Tax Return' form, and any other documentation of his/her financial need; two letters of recommendation from his/her teachers, counselors, and/or other advisors; and two essays addressing the questions listed on the application (see application for details). The completed application must be sent to the applicant's nearest Tzu Chi Foundation Regional Office. Applications sent to the national offices will not be considered. A list of regional offices and respective deadline dates is available on the application form.
