Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior or older to apply for this freshman year award.
  4. Must enroll in three or more classes each semester.
  5. Must be a current resident of affordable housing meaning the resident family must have been income qualified to move onto the property or receiving rental assistance through a recognized Federal housing program (Section 8, Rent Supplement, Rental Assistance Payments, or Low Income Housing Tax Credit program).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Additional Information: This scholarship is provided in honor of Bill Gandert, an individual who was instrumental in the creation of numerous public housing authorities in the State of Ohio as well as general counsel and Executive Director of the Mansfield, Crawford, Huron, Marion and Seneca County Metropolitan Housing Authorities. A vocal advocate for the poor, Bill helped found a number of poverty programs in his state and was an active NLHA member, serving as the organization’s 7th President.

Award Amount: $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online from the National Leased Housing Association (NHLA) website. To be considered for this award, students must first register for an account on the NHLA scholarship application portal. Applicants must then select just one scholarship he or she is eligible for and complete the corresponding online application form. In addition to the short informational sections of the online application, students may also be asked to upload supporting documents such as transcripts, financial information forms, or letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online by 5:00 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
