Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding. Last year, 23 awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a non-traditional student who is enrolled in a postsecondary institution OR certified training program.
  4. Must enroll part time or full time in 10 or more class/training hours per week.
  5. Must be a current resident of Affordable Housing, meaning the resident family must have been income qualified to move onto the property or receiving rental assistance through a recognized rental assistance program (Section 8, Rent Supplement, Rental Assistance Payments or Low Income Housing Tax Credit program).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Additional Information: Mary Lou Manzie was a woman who dedicated her career to providing safe, decent and affordable housing. She was always willing to look at new and effortless ways to achieve that goal. A member of the National Leased Housing Association from 1975 until her death in 2006, she served as an Officer and Director of NLHA for many years. The applicant must demonstrate a commitment to achieving education/training that promotes marketability in the community workforce and outline his/her goal to achieving full-time employment within the next five years.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online from the National Leased Housing Association (NHLA) website. To be considered for this award, students must first register for an account on the NHLA scholarship application portal. Applicants must then select just one scholarship he or she is eligible for and complete the corresponding online application form. In addition to the short informational sections of the online application, students may also be asked to upload supporting documents such as transcripts, financial information forms, or letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
