Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 12 scholarships were awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a high school graduate who is currently enrolled in an accredited community college or certificate-granting institution OR have completed 30 or more credit hours and be currently enrolled at a college or university OR have achieved an undergraduate degree and be enrolled in or accepted into a graduate-level program.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  4. Must be the child of a female soldier or veteran.
  5. Must have a parent who served or is serving honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, or Army National Guard.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher if a community college or certificate student OR have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher if a college, university, or graduate student.

Description: This scholarship is open to children of women who served honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard and are attending community college, certificate, college, university, or graduate programs. Community college or certificate students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher or undergraduates or graduate students with a 3.0 or higher are eligible.

Application requirements for the Army Women’s Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program – Children of Soldiers/Veterans are:

Additional Information: Scholarships are based on merit, academic potential, community service, letters of recommendation, and need. Selection of the Legacy Scholarship recipient(s) will be made by a scholarship committee appointed by the Board of Directors of the U.S. Army Women's Foundation. Applicants who were selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by early March. Each level of scholarship award will be evaluated and considered separately by the USAWF Scholarship Committee who will also determine the number of scholarships awarded for each level and the amounts of each scholarship. Army women will be considered in one category and the children of Army women will be considered in a separate category. In this way, peers will compete with peers.

Award Amount: Students attending community college and certificate programs will be awarded up to $1,000. Students attending college, university, and graduate programs will be awarded up to $2,500. All awards are non-renewable; however, previous recipients may reapply. Past AWF Legacy Scholarship recipients may receive a total of two awards in any category except Graduate Studies, which may only receive one award. The scholarship funds may be used to assist with tuition, fees, books, and school-documented room and board. Scholarships are awarded only to students attending accredited institutions. The funds will be sent to the academic institution for documented expenses and must be used in the academic year awarded. The academic year of the award begins the fall semester after the award announcement. These funds may not be used for prior academic expenses.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,750.

Applications are available on the Army Women's Foundation (AWF) website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an essay of two pages or less (typed, double-spaced) highlighting why he/she should be considered for this scholarship and addressing future plans as related to the program of study and include pertinent information in assessing other areas to include community service, activities, and work experience (must specifically address how the Army has impacted his/her life and/or goals); an official transcript from his/her college/university (or official high school/GED transcripts if a new college applicant); two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a school advisor, counselor, dean of students, etc. (must include title and contact information); and commander's verification of active duty or qualified documentation of his/her sponsor's service (e.g. Department of Defense Form DD-214). The application must be completed online. All other application materials must be mailed to the address provided, and must be postmarked by the deadline date.
