Helping Hands for Single Moms

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies based on the number of applicants and available funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must reside in Maricopa County/the Phoenix-Metro Valley OR the Tucson Metropolitan area (Arizona).
  4. Must be legally single/divorced and cannot reside with a domestic partner.
  5. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher if a resident of the Maricopa County area OR a grade point average of 2.5 or higher if a resident of the Tucson area.
  6. Must carry nine or more credit hours per semester.
  7. Must be enrolled in college (or, if a nursing student, be on a waiting list). It is recommended that students apply after completion of their first semester (of nine credits or more).
  8. Must be female.
  9. Must have at least one child under the age of 11 living with her.
  10. Must have a low income.

Additional Information: This is a very competitive scholarship designed to assist low-income single mom families while the mom is earning her college degree. In addition to financial assistance, Helping Hands for Single Moms (HHSM) provides other program services to scholarship recipients. Services received depend on the level of scholarship a student receives from HHSM (full supportive services or a partial award). Recipients must attend and participate in the regularly scheduled meetings of the Single Moms Network and must be responsible and responsive program participants.

Award Amount: $270 per month, available until the student completes her degree. Additional services are also available to recipients; further details are available on the Helping Hands for Single Moms website.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,600.
