Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies (in 2019 there were 3 awards).
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a female.
  2. Must be graduate student who has had an interruption in her academic progress due to life circumstances.
  3. Must be approaching the completion phase of her geoscience degree.
  4. Must be someone who has contributed to, and will continue to contribute to, both the geosciences and the larger world community through her academic and personal strengths.

Description: The Chrysalis Scholarship provides degree-completion funding for women geoscience grad students whose education has been significantly interrupted by life circumstances. Awarded funds aim to cover costs related to completion of her thesis/dissertation, beyond what is traditionally covered by primary research funding.

Application requirements for the Chrysalis Scholarship are:

  • Essay
  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Personal statement.
Additional Information: The Chrysalis Scholarship provides degree-completion funding for women geoscience graduate students whose education has been significantly interrupted by life circumstances. Awarded funds are intended to cover costs associated with completion of her thesis/dissertation, beyond what is traditionally covered by primary research funding. Costs may include drafting expenses, child-care, defense travel, late-stage research and analyses, or anything necessary to assist a candidate during those critical, final days.

Award Amount: Up to $2,000 and a one-year student membership with AWG.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

To apply for Chrysalis Scholarship, you need to write a letter of application in which you detail your background, career goals and objectives, how the scholarship will be used, and the nature and length of the interruption to your education. You also need two letters of reference. One from your dissertation advisor and another from a scientist you choose. Application should be submitted by email.
