Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of the United States, U.S. territories, or Canada.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be enrolled full time in grades 5-8 in public, private, or home school.
  5. Must be exceptionally involved in and demonstrate a strong passion for science.

Description: This award is open to U.S. and Canadian female students who are in grades 5-8. Students must be exceptionally involved in and have a strong passion for science.

Application requirements for the NSTA Angela Award are:

  • Application form
  • Nomination
  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Essay
  • Support materials
Additional Information: The award has been established in honor of Gerry Wheeler and his outstanding dedication to NSTA and lifelong commitment to science education. Excellence of involvement or strong connection to science is the main criteria for selection of the recipient. Other criteria include: extent of involvement in and passion for science; evidence of sustained accomplishments or progress/interest in science; evidence that the student's interest in science has impacted others; and quality of support materials. The awardee will be honored at the Teachers Awards Banquet at the NSTA National Conference. NSTA employees, NSTA Board and Council members, award judges, and their immediate families are not eligible to apply.

Award Amount: This award consists of a $1,000 US EE Savings Bond or Canada Savings Bond purchased for the equivalent issue price.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
