Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a female.
  3. Must enroll full time.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher if a freshman applicant, or 3.0 or higher if a sophomore or junior applicant.
  5. Must be an incoming or current college freshman.
  6. Must plan to major in computer, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  8. Preference is given to students attending the following institutions: Bradley University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Maryland-College Park, Morgan State University, Penn State University, Purdue University.

Description: This award is available for U.S. female incoming and current college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who are majoring in computer, electrical, or mechanical engineering and enroll full time at select preferred schools. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher if freshmen or 3.0 or higher if not a freshman.

Additional Information: Under-represented groups and disabled and veteran candidates will be given preference. Applicants cannot be receiving full funding for education (tuition, fees, and books or equivalent) from their school or another organization (e.g., members of the Armed Services attending U.S. military academies, students receiving full reimbursement from an employer). Applicants must enroll in a program accredited by ABET. Accreditation information for specific programs is available online at main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications must be completed online at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) website. The applicant should submit only one application; she will be considered for all scholarships for which she is eligible. Please note: Freshmen applicants cannot submit an application until March 1. In addition to completing the online application, the student must upload the following documents: current official transcripts from all schools attended; a letter of acceptance to an ABET-accredited college or university; and a resume. The student must also submit email contact information for two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a teacher in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) field who is familiar with the student's work. The other letter must be from a person who has known the student for two or more years and who is not a relative or member of the student's family. Recommenders will be sent information regarding submission of their letters; the letters are due approximately one week after the student's application deadline. The online application and all required supporting materials must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. CT on the appropriate deadline date. The deadline date for freshmen applicants is May 15; the deadline date for all other applicants is Feb. 15.
