Soroptimist International of the Americas

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. The annual program begins at the club level; club level recipients proceed to regionals, where they are then eligible for one of the three grand prizes.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be female.
  3. Must be a resident of one of the following countries or territories: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guam, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Phillipines, Taiwan, the United States of America (including Puerto Rico), or Venezuela.
  4. Must provide the primary financial support for her family.
  5. Must be enrolled or accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program.

Description: This award is available to women who are members of Soroptimist International, provide primary financial support for their family, and have demonstrated financial need. Applicants must be motivated to career and educational advancement, and must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.

Additional Information: Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Previous recipients are ineligible to apply. Women who already have an undergraduate degree are ineligible to apply. Soroptimists, employees of Soroptimist, and the immediate families of both are ineligible to apply. Award recipients will be notified between January and June. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Award Amount: The award amount at the club level varies. The 28 regional winners receive $5,000 and an additional $3,000 (if applicable). The regional first-place winners then become eligible to receive one of three $10,000 finalist awards. All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,193.

Applications are available on the Soroptimist International website and may be submitted starting August 1 through Nov. 15 of each year. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit: two letters of recommendation using the forms provided in the application packet; a personal statement of 750 words or less addressing the topics listed on the application; and a description of her financial need, including income and educational expenses. The completed application and supporting materials must be sent to the regional address provided on the website and received by Nov. 15. Applications will then be forwarded to the applicant's local participating Soroptimist club by Dec. 15. Applications sent to the Soroptimist headquarters will not be considered.
