Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 2,500 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a current undergraduate student.
  4. Must be receiving a federal Pell Grant or be able to provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.

Description: This scholarship is available for U.S. undergraduate students who plan to study or intern abroad in the same country for at least four weeks; the country cannot be Cuba or on the U.S. State Department's Travel Warning list. Students must be receiving or will receive a federal Pell Grant.

Additional Information: The applicant must be applying to or have been accepted into a study abroad program or internship eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. The applicant must be studying or interning abroad for at least four weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be in one country for at least four consecutive weeks. The applicant may be studying or interning abroad in any country except a country on the U.S. Department of State's current Travel Warning list. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range of public and private institutions from all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Please note: Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive an additional scholarship through the Critical Need Language Award. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominantly spoken will automatically be considered for the Critical Need Language Award. Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually, non-renewable. The average award is $4,000. Recipients must use the award to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance and international airfare. Gilman Scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once. If a student previously declined the Gilman Scholarship, he/she is welcome to re-apply, as long as he/she still meets all eligibility requirements.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $4,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in December for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online on the Institute of International Education (IIE) website by clicking on the "Apply" link. As part of the online application, the student must submit two essays, one regarding his/her statement of purpose and one regarding his/her follow-on service project proposal. The essays are limited to 7,000 characters (including spaces). Guidelines for writing the essays are available online at www.iie.org/en/Programs/Gilman-Scholarship-Program/Application-Process by clicking on the "Essays" tab. The student must also upload his/her official transcripts to the online application. The student must include a transcript from his/her current institution; the transcript should include his/her current "in progress" term or the completed term immediately prior to his/her application. The student must also include transcripts from any previous institution where he/she was a degree-seeking student. Students who are current freshmen should also include high school transcripts. IIE considers it acceptable for students to open official transcripts in order to upload them to the application. Student copies are also acceptable. Web-based transcripts (such as those personally printed from a student account) are acceptable only for transfer institutions. The student must also obtain online certifications from his/her study abroad advisor and financial aid advisor. All application materials must be received by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on the appropriate deadline date.
